Citizen Scientists Contribute to Real-Time Monitoring of Lake Water Quality Using 3D Printed Mini Secchi Disks

Citizen science aims to mobilise the general public, motivated by curiosity, collect scientific data and contribute advancement of knowledge. In this article, we describe a citizen network that has been developed assess water quality in 100 km long tropical lake-estuarine system (Vembanad Lake), which directly or indirectly influences livelihood around 1.6 million people. Deterioration lake resulted frequent outbreaks water-associated diseases, leading morbidity occasionally, mortality. Water colour clarity are easily measurable can be used study quality. Continuous observations on relevant spatial temporal scales generate maps for identifying areas turbid eutrophic. A scientists was established with support students from 16 colleges affiliated three universities Kerala (India) research institutions, stakeholders such as houseboat owners, non-government organisations (NGOs), regular commuters, inland fishermen, others residing vicinity Vembanad Lake keen contribute.
